ID-100120579I meet people every day who have battled their weight for years; either being ‘on’ or ‘off’ a diet. Living this way has meant an endless struggle with food. They deprive themselves when they are ‘on’ a diet and overindulge when they are ‘off’. As a result, they never really feel satisfied with what they eat or how they look. One thing they all seem to have in common is that they have tried many diets and they still don’t weigh what they want. Sound familiar?

Powerful Weight Loss Tip: dieting is not the answer

Think of it this way: if dieting was a truly effective means of achieving permanent weight loss, everyone who ever went on a diet (including you) would be thin – and that would be that. Unfortunately, as you know, this is not the case. Dieting works for some people, but not for most. That being said, if dieting is not the answer, what can you do to lose weight and keep it off?

You can start by learning from the pros. Participants in the National Weight Control Registry, (http://www.nwcr.ws/) a database of American adults (80 percent of whom are women) who have lost and kept off between 30 and 300 pounds for at least one year (and up to 66 years!) report several behaviors that have helped them keep weight off. These successful losers…

  • Eat breakfast on most if not all days.
  • Limit dining out to an average of three times a week, and fast food to less than once a week.
  • Weigh themselves at least once a week.
  • Watch minimal amounts of television – less than about 10 hours per week.
  • Exercise often – at least an hour per day.

Now, I’d love to hear from you.

Are you a successful ‘non-dieting’ loser? How have you lost weight and kept it off?
