breakfastI always wake up hungry and look forward to my first meal of the day. Honestly, I can’t imagine starting my day without breakfast, but that’s not the case for everyone.

With time being in short supply in the morning, breakfast can be the most difficult meal of the day for many people – so it often gets skipped. Aside from the time factor, some people don’t eat breakfast because they are dieting and think it will help them with weight loss, but quite the opposite is true.

People who eat breakfast are able to manage their weight more easily than those who forgo the morning meal. Research shows that breakfast eaters actually eat fewer calories overall – most likely because they don’t overeat later in the day due to hunger.

Have I convinced you that eating breakfast every day is the right thing to do? Excellent! Now let me give you some ideas on how to start your day right.

The first thing you want to do is keep driving right past Dunkin’ Donuts where bagels and cream cheese are in the 500-calorie range. And the Frozen Coffee Coolatta  is a gut-busting 400 calories and 43 grams of sugar. Instead, you’re better off preparing something quick and easy at home or the office. And by “quick and easy,” I don’t mean grabbing a processed meal from Aunt Jemima. This brand of convenience food is famous for its breakfast items, but not for keeping you well-nourished and healthy. The Sausage and Egg Scramble has an excessively long list of ingredients, 5 grams of saturated fat and 890 mg sodium per serving. Instead, try these flavorful Muffin Frittatas. They can be made ahead of time and reheated in the microwave for a quick breakfast. They’re perfectly portioned and freezable! You can turn one into a breakfast sandwich-to-go by pairing it with a whole grain English muffin. Add a piece of fruit, and you’ve got a well-balanced breakfast.

For a really quick, protein-rich, hot breakfast, cook one slice of Applegate Farms Organic Turkey Bacon  (only 35 calories and 1.5 g fat) in a frying pan (lightly sprayed with cooking spray) with one egg. You can sprinkle a little low-fat cheese on top and pair with a slice of whole-grain toast. Adding a piece of fruit to this meal will make it more complete. It is a good idea to shoot for at least three food groups when meal planning to get in a variety of nutrients.

One of my breakfast favorites is McCann’s Quick and Easy Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal. I top it with some blueberries or sliced banana, toasted pecans and a sprinkle of cinnamon. This power breakfast keeps me feeling full for several hours.

If you happen to be someone who just has no appetite when you wake up, try making a smoothie like this Banana Breakfast Smoothie and sip on throughout the morning. Lacking an appetite in the morning is not uncommon, but at the same time, it’s not a good reason to skip breakfast entirely. If you do, you’re likely to end up having a “bad” eating day. Instead, make it a “good” eating day by breaking-the-fast with breakfast.

Now I’d love to hear from you.
