I’m sure you are familiar with the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” How about, “An apple a day keeps the fat away?” According to a recent study done at the University of Iowa, a natural substance (ursolic acid) found in apple peels can partially protect mice from obesity and some of its harmful effects. More studies needs to be done in this area; but in the meantime, there are other good reasons to eat apples.

• One medium-sized apple contains about four grams of fiber. Some of it is in the form of pectin, a type of soluble fiber that has been linked to lower levels of LDL or “bad” cholesterol.

• The fiber in an apple will keep you feeling full longer. That’s because it takes our bodies longer to digest foods with fiber than foods without fiber such as most processed ‘diet’ food.

• Apples provide an excellent low calorie snack to help with weight control; only about 95 calories in a medium-sized fruit. They are an easily portable on-the-go food.
